I do believe photography is fine art because only crackpot intellectual lineages assert otherwise, and sometimes I see studio pieces that make that make sense, but mostly it doesn't feel like art to me.

mostly it seems like....journalism? or decoration, Ikea print style.

confession

this is all orthogonal to its being valuable and technically complex, of course

confession

@maya they're all labels that approximate what the labeller gets or thinks they should get out of the thing

a lot of which might just be a connection to a particular social prestige

confession

@carcinopithecus see I don't agree! I know that the "art world" theory of definition of art is pretty accepted but it's never seemed right to me

confession

@maya i spend a lot of time thinking about photography, taking photos, developing them, etc etc and yet i feel the same mixed feelings. it seems like a lot of the artistic touches one can add are very subtle and require a lot from the viewer to notice and appreciate? it's hard to evoke emotion or make commentary using just photographs

though i think i feel the same about hyper-realistic drawing too. i'm amazed by the skill displayed, but that's about all?

confession

@lm absolutely true! a lot of e.g. colored pencil work on Instagram is technically staggering and yet doesn't seem to engage in the way I think of art doing

confession

@lm @maya i'm imagining a scenario where

i scribble something on paper as a visual aid in doing or explaining something on the spot - purely practical

years later (maybe after that intersection where the crash happened got totally gentrified) i look at it and it evokes some other stuff in my mind

i put it up for display with a plaque that sets out all this stuff that this scribble got me thinking about, but omit that none of this had been on my mind when i drew it

when is it 馃叞锔弐t?

@carcinopithecus @lm if you're interested in thought experiments like this I have this and I've liked it a lot goodreads.com/book/show/303905

confession

@carcinopithecus @maya this is an oddly specific hypothetical situation

i'm not really interested in drawing bright lines around what is art and when it becomes art. sketches and diagrams entirely have the ability to be viewed as art. (examples: the works of david macaulay, scientific diagrams in pop art, that one joy division album cover) so, maybe it's always been art? you certainly hung onto it for a reason instead of tossing it after the explanation!
